I was more worried about toxins being leached into the soil, then being
taken up by the plants, which I would then eat.  Maybe that's not a concern
with creosote, as it is with lead or arsenic.  But when you mention fumes,
it makes me consider the pillars in my basement which support the kitchen
flooring (old house!), as they are painted with creosote.
