Christi, it's not that farmers do anything really different but there
are 2 main reasons.
Firstly most store bought tomatoes are picked before they are ripe to
give them time to get to the store.
Also they are probably different varieties. Again the commercilly
availale ones are hybridised to give good travelling and storage
properties. this tends to sacrifice flavour.
