I visited the South island--Dunedin--last (NZ) summer. What a beautiful
place--and people had such beautiful gardens. I think people seemed far
more interested in growing flowers in their yards than we see in
Massachusetts. In walking down a street near the house where we stayed,
we passed many many houses where people were active gardeners, with all
kinds of flowering plants, not just a few impatiens or a window box. And
if I said anything to the person working in the yard, I usually got a
tour from a very knowledgeable gardener. I was also surprised by the
number of small greenhouses in the yards.
I know Dunedin is farther south than you are, but summer was
definitely very cool by northeast US standards. We had a wonderful time
and saw more beautiful countryside than I had ever imagined. I hope I'll
be able to go again someday. Judy Warner Massachusetts, USA
