Comments and questions

I'm one of the lurkers, coming out of the closet for for a rare comment.
Usually I enjoy any contribution people make to the list...hey, who am I to
complain if I don't particpate. But my mailbox was so full of things that
made me talk back to my computer screen that I had to write.

First, I loved the joke, and hubby reading over my shoulder got a good
giggle too. I think it was definitely garden related, and I'm just trying
to figure out who I could con into digging up my yard.

Second, please, if you are going to reply to messages, learn how to trim
them so you only include the 'meat' of the message that would be required
to understand your new comment. The zucchini-spaghetti recipe sounds
delicious (and I also vote veggie recipes as appropriate posts) but I ended
up with three copies because of 'thank-you' replies, and it was LONG.
Enough. I hope I don't end up with anymore copies.

Third, (here's my question) I've never grown beets before, and the little
critters are bewildering me. The seeds were directly sown according to
package directions (I think 1/4"to 1/2" depth, these are the ones my
toddler helped to sow by dumping the packet). They germinated on schedule,
and profusely, and I check on their growth by thinning them. But the tasty
root part still seems mighty small, the biggest one wouldn't be bigger than
a marble after six weeks, and they're also sitting above the surface of the
soil. I would have expected them to grow undergound. Any helpful advice??

Fourth (another question), when can leeks be used, and for what? My leeks
were happily 'puddled-in' to their current home about eight weeks ago and
are about as big as my thumb, so I guess they have a way to grow yet. I
can't wait to make leek soup, but what else?

Finally, can someone explain what 'sunset zones' are? It sounds very
romantic.
