By no means all apples are biennial bearing. Some are worse than
others. In UK Laxton's Superb is one of the worst but even that can be
managed somewhat, the other one that I know firsthand is Devonshire
Quarrenden. Most modern varieties are better in this respect, but a
lot depends on the weather. When thinning take the centre fruit out of
the cluster as it has a short stalk and has a reputation for being the
worst for keeping. After that two apples per cluster is about right but
you may like to finish thinning until after the June drop.
