Re: Kohlrabi
Pat,
Above and beyond all that's been said already, I have found that kohlrabi,
like its cauliflower cousins (and many other brassicas), positively
**hates** inconsistent growth rates. Grow them *fast* in well-manured moist
soil, and they normally romp away. (To get consistent, predictable
germination rates, I always use the propagator @ 65-70F, though.)
For the general varieties, the tennis-ball size often mentioned is about
right to harvest at, though you can go a little further than that in good
conditions. Go too far, and they'll be woody -- ditto if they've spent too
much time in growth throughout! If you're interested in something a tad
larger, try the "Prague Giant" aka "Superschmelz" variety. They're a bit of
a culture shock if you've only been exposed to "standard" kohlrabi <g>:
mine are curently cropping at "footballs" of 5-7 lbs *each* and slice "like
butter" -- and it's much more congenial to have to peel & slice one big 'un
to get 2.5kg for the freezer than reams of little 'uns... <s>
