I have had good success with carrots by planting them directly in the
ground, covered by about 1/4 inch of soil. I then cover the planted row
with a board which I remove in about 7 days. It has been my experience
that carrot seeds do not keep well so I tend to plant older seeds a little
denser than fresh seed. One other thing is, in colder weather areas like
mine, (north of San Francisco), carrots grow rather slowly during the
winter months, so I plant a few more during September, and hold off
planting during January, and February.
