This is very highly possible. I don't know if you're familiar with a tomato variety called Tumbler F1. I've seen the seed sold for about $2.50 for 10 seeds! Last year, I came across a seed supplier who was selling it super cheap. It was a bit worrisom because the F1 was dropped but, as you said, it may never have been a hybrid in the first place.
