irradiated, etc

-- [ From: nonayobusiness * EMC.Ver #2.3 ] --

Simple. I have heard discussions about how exposing food to radiation can
form free radicals, which apparently something that can eventually cause
cancer. Are we only concerned about smoking causing lung cancer? What
about all the other kinds of cancers and the things that cause them? Also,
I hear that irradiating food can make it taste LOUSY! Also, as usual, the
gov't makes a law about how the food companies do not have to or are not
allowed to say if the foods are treated, or not, similar to what Mario
Cuomo did here in NY with the dairy cows. A dairy farmer who does NOT use
the hormone that boosts milk production in his herd by about 10-15% is
prohibited by LAW from saying that he does not use that hormone! Ronny
Brook farms in NY is one farm that suffered from big time legal trouble,
because he dared to say that his cows would never use this hormone. Use of
hormones like this can increase the amount of mastitis that the cows suffer
from, and then they have to be treated more often with antibiotics. This
means that I am probably forcing my children to ingest this kind of garbage,
which will help all sorts of bacteria to become resistant to antibiotics,
and when my kids get sick, there might not be any medication to save them.

I must say also, at this time that the inference made by you, Rick, is that
I would be one of these environmentalist Whacko's, and get nasty,
hysterical, and personal, which if you have paid attention to what I've
said in earlier posts, you would know I am certainly NOT! I just feel like
it is very important for everybody to be able to make informed choices
about how they live their lives. It seems that the only choice the
government wants us to be able to make is about whether women can get an
abortion. I want to be able to make up my own mind about what my family is
going to eat. Generally, I cannot buy organic vegetables, because they are
too expensive , but I want to be able to get them if I want them.

As far as genetically altered stuff, I think there is a potato that has BT
in it already. This is really stupid, because BT is one of the really good
things for organic gardeners. Now, some moth has already begun to show
resistance to it, because all the potatoes have it in it, so soon BT will
probably be useless as a tool for controlling insects. Then there are
people who are allergic to corn, for instance, and if they put genes from
corn into a tomato, how will these people know, and sometimes people die
from severe allergic reactions. Last year a boy died in front of his
classmates in a NYC high school, because he bought a candy bar that had
peanut oil in it, and he didn't know. I think that people who have to
avoid certain foods for religious reasons will also not be able to know for
sure what is in their food. Certain religions have to avoid legumes during
a certain holiday. What if they put genes from this very large plant
family into other edible crops? With the track record of our government, I
can't see how these people are going to be able to eat ANYTHING for 8 days,
because they will not know for sure what it is they are eating. I am not
against the concept of moving genes around, specifically, because it MIGHT
improve the quality of our lives. However, I am absolutely opposed to the
gov't being able to say that these things are organic and natural, because
they aren't, and we all have a right to know what is in our food. We are
all entitled to know the TRUTH so we can make informed decisions about our
lives. So there! (WAs I nasty or nice!?)
