Hi, Stan. The 'tapes' I was talking about are cables, like thick cords (as
thick as an outdoor-use extension cord), and you can bury them in the soil
without a enclosing it in a pipe. I know you can use them outdoors in a
cold frame (mine is just a portable wooden box, with sloping sides and a
back wall taller than the front, and an old window sash for a lid), so
probably you could put them right into a garden bed. I am going to look
through a few books and see if anyone has done it before and written about it.
