It's usually slug damage. To avoid it I grow in deepish containers where
the slugs can't reach. Can you slugproof your frames? Can you
inspect them at night by torchlight? Personally I would see no harm in
slug bait inside the frames where birds and animals can't get at it. BTW
French Breakfast is a bit choosy where it will grow successfully,it
needs a rich moist soil, the globes are easier.
