Bob,
I'd love to have a pond! What other veggies do you grow? Is it warm
enough for peppers and eggplant? I have been to Bristol many times for
work- where are you in relation to there? Sorry, I have no info on leeks- I
asked the original question!

Hello,
I have just joined the list and I am starting the plan the coming year
of vegetables. I moved to a new house over a year ago and have started a
vegetable area in one part of my garden. Various plans have come and
gone but eventually I have decided on 6 - 18' x 4' beds, a fruit area,
greenhouse, compost bins and comfrey patch with a small wild life pond
area. (Plus any other parts of the garden that my wife will not miss).
I am curious about the method of growing leeks in a trench. All of the
books that I have over here (England) say that you grow leeks in a seed
bed and wait until about pencil size, then transplant them into a hole
made with a dibber about 6 inches deep. The leeks are just dropped one
in each hole and the hole is filled with water not soil. As they grow
and fill out the hole they can then have the earth mounded up around
them to blanch them. This method is good in that you can start the leeks
in a seed tray out of the main bad whether and then transplant them in
better whether.
I look forward to reading the postings. Sorry that I can not put my zone
number after my name as I do not know what mine is.

I'm planning on growing both this year. I've heard that
asparagus does not
NEED to be planted in a 12" trench. Has anyone out there
planted the crowns
only an few inches deep (and how were the results)?
How about leeks? If they start out in a trench in
spring, don't they
drown in spring rainstorms??
