If the deer are as hungry as you say, and once they have already learned you provide a smorgasboard, probably none of the following will work, only high velocity lead poisoning, or a high fence will work (and we had a seven foot electric fence around one young orchard that the deer cleared with ease). Dogs will sometimes work, but it depends on the disposition and intelligence of the dog. Here's some: Human hair tied in bunches on the limbs. Bars of soap - the hotel size ones. Preditor animal urine, even human. Lion waste from the zoo has been used. Tobasco sauce, sprayed twice a week (more often, if it rains a lot). There are commercial sprays based on "picante," but they are a lot more expensive than what you can make yourself with your own heat. I'm sad.... My husband came in from getting the newspaper this morning, turned to me and said "You didn't like those yews, anyways, did you?" Even though this is not related specifically to vege's, and I think this subject has been "talked" about before; but quite frankly, I have never had a problem with Bambie.... until now, that is.. My whole foundation landscape has been, well, let's just say, "pruned" rather severely. The once full yews are now twigs, hollies are stripped, and winter creepers are just gone! On the positive side, (I always look for a positive side), the deer left their droppings on the lawn as fertilizer. My first reaction was to put a minefield in the lawn, but upon calming down, I realize that I was just over-reacting. So, ANY advice on how to prevent deer eating foundation plants in the winter is greatly appreciated, please!!!! Thanx. Rene.
