Dear Nesa:
Squash vine borers are a big problem here in Western New York. What I do
is keep the plants covered with a floating row cover such as Remay until
they start to flower. Then you must remove the cover so insects can help
with pollinating. I keep the stems dusted with Rotenone, which must be
reapplied ever time it rains. If I still detect a vine borer after all
of this (one sees the tell-tale yellowish grains on the soil below the
vine) I cut a slit in the vine with a knife until I locate the borer,
squish it, then cover the slit stem with soil and water well and hope
the plant makes it. Usually, it does. Good luck!
