Pole Beans

I took my first pole bean off the vine this week (Kentucky Wonder). I ate
it there and then, right off the vine. It tasted kinda tough and bland
compared to my bush beans (Blue Lake 274) of comparable size - about the
size of my finger.
Am I making the mistake of using too small a sample to make this comparison?
Are there more "flavorful" varieties of pole beans?
