Cucumbers DO have separate male and female flowers. The females have a tiny
cucumber just behind the flower, the males don't.
Its best to remove any male flowers as soon as they form as if the female
flower is fertilized the fruit is meant to have a bitter flavour. Don't
worry, the cucumber will form even if it is not pollinated! This is not
true of cougettes, melons etc which need to be fertilized before the fruits
form.
In my experience the male flowers usually develop during cooler periods,
but this may be a trait of the varieties I grow which are 'all female' F1
hybrids.
Hope this helps.
