Dear Volunteer.
The Garden Writers Association of America welcomes you to
the wann and wonderful world of PAR where garden communicators
and gardeners get together to deliver fresh garden produce to the food
bank! To help you to organize, here's our Workbook and Press Kit.
They're based on feedback from volunteers who in just five years have
spread PAR campaigns to towns and cities in 44 states.
(I) The GWAA Workbook suggests an organizational structure that assures garden produce for the
agencies that feed the hungry. It tells how to enlist a food bank partner, structure a committee, and
plan and coordinate the campaign from launch to final harvest.
On page 7, you'll find a list of campaign supplies you can order (free). The PAR toll-free number
and supplies are provided by the Garden Writers Association of America thanks to our PAR sponsors.
The supplies include a motivational video hosted by Jim Wilson, and a 30-second Public Service
Announcement created for PAR by our media partner, Home and Garden Television (HGTV).
There's ad space at the end of the PSA that may be sold to sponsors, or used to list local drop-off
sites for donations.
(2) The PAR Press Kit is intended as a guide to creating a kit of your own. Press kits are used to provide
campaign background for the newspapers, radio, TV, and potential sponsors you will need to help
with your campaign. The GWANPAR brochures, backgrounders and clippings show the national
scope of PAR and lend status to your campaign. The cover letters, press releases and clippings of
PAR features are examples of approaches that have worked. You are invited to adaptlcopy/use
anything in the Press Kit. Don't worry about your writing: the language of the heart gets through.
Each Plant A Row for the Hungry campaign is as individual as the community that sponsors it.
Your fresh views, new ideas, and individual interpretations of the suggestions in the Workbook and the
Press Kit will give your campaign life and compelling force.
Please keep us aware of your progress. If no one hears about your campaign and its achievements,
it's as though it had never happened! The Garden Writers Association of America provides a quarterly
PAR newsletter to keep PAR networks in touch. a forum for ideas on how a community can take care of
