Nesa,
When I lived & worked in Thailand, I came across very similar circumstances
"training" farmers, many who were twice my age in organic methods of
farming.
The age thing is quite serious so I approached the whole task more as a
learner rather than teacher. You have the opportunity to work with older
people, many who may have gardened in their younger years, and have a wealth
of knowledge to share. Using them as teachers for the rest of the community
is a fantastic way of taking the pressure off you and still achieving
something worthwhile.
I'm not a big person for ceremony but I came to realize that it was taken
quite seriously in Thailand. Whenever I started a project, I got a village
headperson or some sort of figurehead to do some kind of ribbon-cutting
ceremony, shaking my hand etc. Did wonders when I later needed to organize
people and get resources together. Get that Member of Parliament to help you
with this. Good for his image too.
I hope this advice helps Nesa.
