A comment on the note about watering daily in an arid climate - I'm not an
expert, but gardening books and magazines I've read all recommend less
frequent, deeper watering to encourage the plants to form deeper roots. That
way, if you do have a drought (whether natural, or because you go away on
vacation for a week or two), the plants can tolerate it better. Frequent,
shallow watering encourages shallow roots, which can make for plants that will
die quickly if they get stressed. (I missed the beginning of this thread, so I
hope I'm not repeating something that lots of other folks have already said!)
