Brussels sprouts from the grocery are inedible.

IIRC, you live south of SF Bay?  In that area I'd wait until July 1 or
so, and then start them in 3.5" or larger pots a cool place that gets
morning and evening sun.  You can rig a shade cloth if the conditions do
not occur naturally.

Then set out the plants when they have four or five true leaves.  You
should hold off harvest until the nighttime temps are in the 40's, if it
ever gets that cold where you are.  The best results are obtained when
the mature sprouts are subject to temps in the 30's, and some varieties
are best after they've been frozen.  Not likely to occur in coastal Ca.
