Re: electric slug fence

Hey, the electric slug fence works.
Here's what I did.
I took a 10 ft. piece of 1/2 inch poly tubing,(the type used for drip
irrigation systems) and used electrical tape to hold the 17 gauge
fence wire to the top of the poly tubing, about every 12 inches or
so. I attached one end of the wire to my electric fence wire.
I laid the poly tubing down on the ground with the wire side on top.
Sure enough, the poly tubing acted like an insulator and didn't
ground the system unintentionally. (One problem with the poly
tubing is that it doesn't like to lie flat on the ground. I would
bet that garden hose or something else would work better.)
My guess that a slug, or anything else, trying to clime over the
poly tubing,
would get shocked as soon as he touched the wire.
I sprinkled water all over the tube/wire combination while
it was turned on and that had no ill effect.
My only worry about this system working is if the small
animal doesn't possess enough body weight to ensure a
good connection with the soil when the top of the soil is dry.
When the top of the soil is wet, this should not prove to be
a problem.
If any body else out there wants me to experiment with
something else, let me know.

Stan the cheap and lazy gardener

P.S. NO. I will not cover myself with Vaseline and crawl
around the garden to see if this would really work on slugs!
     Hmmmmmmmm...... Well, maybe.
