Yes you are right, the berries are very poisonous. However, they have no
purpose from the point of view of getting potatoes. It will do no harm to
the plant to remove them and will put your mind at rest from the safety
point of view.
I would imagine that the children would need to be pretty determined to eat
them as they are very bitter.
