snails

-- [ From: nonayobusiness * EMC.Ver #2.3 ] --

Hi Roger, Has your daughter tried any of the barriers that work for slugs?
I think that if you surround the plants or the plot with a strip of copper
(not sure how wide it has to be) this will keep slugs out, so maybe snails
too. Diatomaceous earth, but not the one for swimming pools - you have to
get the gardening grade, which I believe is ground more finely - in a
circle around each plant, or again, the whole plot. But this you have to
reapply after a rain or if it gets washed away with watering. The best way
I find to get rid of slugs (we don't have a snail problem here in NY) is I
just go out at dusk with a pair of leather gloves on & pick the varmints
off and squish them! They come out during the day if it's a rainy one, as
well. If you do this a whole lot, early in the season, and then just keep
your eyes peeled for any signs of damage later in the season, you can get a
jump on the population and not have to start with major measures later on.
Then, you only have to deal next year with the offspring from eggs laid by
the few who slipped through your grasp. That IS, if dealing with snails is
like dealing with slugs! We are having winter all of a sudden here! I am
lucky, because my whole property is on the north side of a hill, so things
hadn't gotten so far along before this 15F cold snap showed up. Lauren B.
