Not that I'm any kind of expert on the subject, but I have read in many
different places that garter snakes should be seen as a gardener's ally, as
they are among the few animals that will eat slugs.  In addition to rock
piles, it's been written that they like to stay in the black plastic that is
made into trash bags.
