I have planted potatoes by doing this: I made a cylinder out of chicken
wire & planted potatoes in the dirt at the bottom. I used potatoes from
the grocery store that were starting to sprout. Then, when the plants were
coming up, I would dump all my weeds and some kitchen waste into the
cylinder, with a little dirt, too. I would sort of sprinkle the stuff down
so as not to hurt the plants coming up. A couple of times we sprinkled
some horse manure and their bedding in there too, but just a little bit.
We got lots of potatoes in a little garden space. They were pretty clean
and some were much bigger than anything you get in the store. I would not
use the newspaper that has the color inks, because these may still be
harmful. The black and white parts are supposed to be OK. -Lauren B.
