Janet,
I use mulch as a weed supressant. My soil is water-logged all winter so
I have a terrible problem with weeds. I use horse manure/sawdust for
heavy duty mulching and compost for the really sensitive plants like
tomatoes and peppers. The tomato and pepper beds stay weed-free all
winter and provide me a relatively dry bed in late winter/early spring
in which to set my early brassica and greens.
