I grew tomatoes from seeds last year with only fluorescent lights (12-16
hours per day) and little "natural" light. They were a little leggy, but I
transplanted into larger pots and buried them all the way up to the first
set of true leaves. once I began hardening them off they filled out
nicely...
Growing seedling tomatoes with fluorescent lights as the light source works
like a charm. If you keep the light source (tube) no more than 1-2" above
the tops of the seedlings, you get best results--a lot more light than
you'll get through a window. I use cheapo fluorescent tubes and start
thousands of seedlings this way each season.
