Thank you, Smitty, for replying to my question. Yesterday I pulled 3 of the
largest rutabagas to cook for dinner...I just couldn't wait! They were just
"OK," did not have that familiar "bite" (for lack of a better word) to it.
Also, the color (to me) was not the familiar yellow color that I'm used to
seeing in a rutabaga...they looked more like white, purple-topped turnips. I
got the seeds from a mail order catalog and it says "RUTABAGA, Purple Top"
on the seed packet. Where do you get your seeds and are yours the real
yellow color? Perhaps I pulled them too soon?
I'm going to take your advice and definitely plant a fall crop. A lite frost
does not harm them, right? I'll probably plant them the begining of Aug. as
sometimes we do get a lite frost around the end of Oct.
Thanks again,
Evelyn

Hello,
Try planting a crop of rutabagas in the middle of july for a fall
harvest.
Like most brassicas rutabagas taste a lot better and do a lot better when
grown as a fall crop.
I plant kohlrabi, kale, rutabagas, broccoli, cauliflower, turnips and
cabbages in july for a fall harvest here in CT zone 6.
You may get away with planting in august because you are more a zone 7
than a zone 6.
