Re: Carrots


Only one sure way, if you don't want to toss diazanon granules in the seed
trench (and I sure don't, especially with a root crop!) is to cover the
whole thing with reemay floating row cover, making sure it is quite
thoroughly sealed with dirt or whatever all the way around, no gaps at all.
Then the fly can't get to the carrots to lay its eggs. If this is
impossible for you, for whatever reasons, then don't cultivate the carrots
or thin on a nice sunny day. The scent of the bruised carrot greens draws
the fly like a magnet. I've also heard that spent coffee grounds heavily
mixed around the base of the carrots confuses the little buggers' sense of
smell, too, but I haven't tried that one.
