A Reemay cover is one of the best ways to protect against the Carrot Rust
fly. What kind of carrot is best depends on whether you are looking for
taste, keeping ability, etc. I planted Nantes because I like the taste, and
the long, cylindrical shape. Carrots do best in a sandy loam because they
are a root vegetable. One resource I checked said that if one wanted to
plant carrots in a clay soil, it would be best to chose some of the shorter
varieties. I'm not sure if drainage is the problem as much as the tighter
composition of the clay. I planted them in a raised bed with very loose soil.
