Re: Tires


We plant sweet potatoes and other crops like horse radish, mint and
sunchokes in tires because:

they keep the soil warm
they keep invasive crops under control
they take up less space in limited space gardens here in the city
one can put them on concrete surfaces or other otherwise unplantable places

Other containers would do just as well, but are not usually expandable.
We've used bushel baskets, fish boxes, milk bottle holders and even actual
flower pots. However, free stuff is to be preferred, and there are tires
all over our universe.

As I said before, there was a post on the og list that indicated there was
no transport of chemicals from the tires to the soil. Even if there were
transport to the soil, I would want to see studies re the up-take of any of
the chemicals by the plants. There haven't been any that I know of yet, but
plant up-take would be the important variable.
