Re: pruning an apple tree

Nick, lucky you to have a Yellow Transparent! It will be good for your
tree to wait until toward the end of May or early June to begin summer
pruning in order to avoid stimulating a growth spurt. Prune for shape
as you would any woody plant or tree: begin removing obviously
congested branches in order to improve appearance and air circulation to
the center of the tree. Just don't shock it or yourself by trying to do
it all in one season. There are many good pruning guides available, but
I particularly like Cass Turnbull's Complete Guide to Landscape Design,
Renovation, and Maintenance. Many guides assume we're starting from
scratch with a trainable young tree, but she offers help to those of us
who have inherited gnarly old ones. Pam, zone 8, Puget Sound
