In answer to your question about vegetable garden rows running west to east and
not north to south, in my garden (near Rochester, NY zone 5) I run mine mostly
west to east. Sometimes, I plant my corn running north-south so that the shade
it creates protects my lettuce, spinach and swiss chard from frying in the hot
afternoon sun.
I use black plastic mulch on the vegetables that really like heat: tomatoes,
peppers and cantaloupes. I even grew my potatoes under the plastic mulch last
summer with great success. It really helps with weed control.
