I've grown tomatillos for many years - in fact, I only planted them once.
They seed themselves very vigorously. The first time I started them
indoors for earlier picking--this is Zone 4, central Mass, last frost date,
May 30, but in subsequent years I haven't bothered since the self seeded
plants seem to catch up, but if I wanted a bigger crop it might be worth
it. They are very hardy and prolific, not terribly attractive, rangy
plants, and might require staking to keep them in bounds, but I've never
had a problem with just letting them be. They would definitely be in my
class of easy to grow.
