I guess I'll just have to try this and see if it works here for my
soil--which is a bit sandy. I have several 4'square beds that have almost
no sides left anyway, so I'll just take the plunge and let you know how it
works. The hay for the paths may work for me too. I raise sheep and so
have lots of hay that's been picked over by fussy sheep and not yet
disintegrated so I'll try that on the paths. I used the Ruth Stout method
of heavy hay mulch when I had a giant garden years ago, but never thought
of it in the paths. I used to get wonderful grass growing in my hay mulch
from the hayseed, but in the sq foot method, if this happens I could see
lifting the grassy hay and turning it over in the beds when they are
empty--sort of a cover crop on the spot composting.
