We like to interplant herbs among the vegetables. Many perennial
herbs are grown here as annuals and planted in October with the cool
season vegetables, then the warm season vegetables planted among the
herbs in March after the cool season vegetable harvest. Most will
make it through mid June before succumbing to the heat. We don't
plant sunflowers among the vegetables because of their reputation for
retarding growth of adjacent plants but we also interpalnt marigolds
and nasturtions although the extension service tells us there is no
evidence they will protect the veggies from nematodes.

We seem to have a conflict with the sunflowers here and much
agreement about adding colour to the vege garden. I will try
sunflowers with my summer veges next season. What veges should I not
plant them against?

Our climate allows the growing of veges all year round. Great for
having cheap fresh veges, but not so good for getting rid of the
bugs. Last winter we had pansies growing between the lettuce and
cabbages. Cabbage leaves made a wonderful background foliage
plant for behind small flowers. Do any of you southern growers get a
year round vege crop?
