RE: hello from Sydney

Welcome David!
Here's a solution to 20 inches of rain: pots! Of course, they drain readily,
so I'm sure pots of hay, grain, and other edibles were included on the ark
in order to feed the animals. Well...that's not Biblical, but they had to
feed the animals somehow, and they had a LOT more rain to deal with than 20
inches! ANYWAY:
Last fall I had pots of herbs on my deck which did very well, but it
was getting cooler, and the herbs didn't look very appetizing, so I
sprinkled carrot seeds among the basil and tarragon just to see what would
happen. WONDERFUL germination, but an winter came on early, so no harvest.
Right now, I've got turnips among some potted iris. Again excellent
germination. My goat gets the thinnings, and hopefully we will get some nice
fat turnips soon. If anyone has a good turnip recipe, I'd like to have a
copy.
	Back to work.

PS: I think I gave up too easily on the carrots and tarragon...I may have
been able to harvest carrots after snowfall, and the tarragon might have
wintered over if the roots were warm enough.
