In my experience asparagus roots are extremely fragile and are best left
undisturbed. You might get away with a quick crop of radishes or some
lettuce but it does not seem worth the risk to the asparagus roots of
planting something with a big root like artichokes. After all if you
lose the asparagus roots you will be back to the beginning waiting for
your first pickings.
