Re: hornworm problem

Enjoyed your post Norma. I also like the fact that container gardening makes everything "moveable"... and if you want to move the plants to different locations whenever you want etc....also very handy :-)
The only real problem that I am having with my first tomato garden (pest wise) is with "hornworms". I'm finding  them to be a real problem...I do manage to find some of them and pull them off of the plants, but not before they have polished off alot of the leaves until there's nothing but stems left....this happens like overnite...and sometimes I will only find the damage they did and (not) the hornworms themselves.Seems they can be very elusive, and with an appetite that won't quit.. I'm still finding more plants that have  damage from one of their recent "all you can eat midnite buffets" on my plants.

My question to all: I was wondering if anyone knows of  a good way to prevent these uninvited pests from invading my garden? They blend into the foliage and it can be really tough to spot them. I've also wondered, where do they come from?
They are like some kind of mystery... almost like they "invent" themselves overnite out of nowhere....and only one horn?.....interesting.

I have struggled for a long time planting and planting and being so disappointed with my garden. If the bugs don;t get it or the soil is not right. Well, you understand all the things that can happen. I was very skeptical about container gardening. But, I got on the web got on some sights and did a lot of research and now I would not do anything else. My vegetables were wonderful. My plants were loaded this year. I suppose it would be a lot of work and a lot of buckets if I were going to plants an acre or two of veggies but I don;t do that anymore. I don;t really have to. I told some ladies today that were visiting I put in 14 roma tomato plants and I have more than enough juice and stewed tomatoes to last my whole family and did some for another couple and I still have a basket to do yet and lots and lots of green ones to ripen yet. It is getting very cool here now. I had one pepper plant that I kept track of to see what the yield would be. I got 16 peppers o! ff that plant. I thought it was finished but I see lots of blossoms and some small peppers. I am sure it will not do anything more I am going to bring it in to winter over. I am very select on what I plant and how much. I do not have to plant as much anymore. Of course you must water more because of the containers but that is about all.
Sorry I just think when I find something that makes life easier I go with it.
