Tomato stem rot

I'd suggest you call an Extension Office. Here in the Willamette Valley,
they have been plagued with more calls than ever before about Late Blight.
It has also hit a lot of potatoes. Your symptoms sound a lot more like
blight than mildew or root rot or other diseases suggested. The black stem
that causes parts of plant to die, fruit that rots before ripening, point to
Late Blight. Too late this year- get rid of all affected plants- rotate
plantings for next year- space plants for ventilation- and if we get another
wet, warmish spring, plan for a preventive spray program with coppers or
daconil. Caging or training up off ground will help. None of mine that
were in the air got blight, but many neighbors had significant losses. D
