Re: First Frost

Ten days ago our high daytime temperatures were still over 100 deg and
nighttime lows were still in the 80s. Today we're seeing highs in the
80s and lows in the 60s with dew point temperatures in the 30s. Nice
fall weather. Had snow on the San Francisco Peaks Tuesday morning.
Most vegetables I sowed the past two weekends have germinated: Swiss
chard, radishes, parsley, onions, broccoli, beets, turnips, dill,
mustard, brussels sprouts, cabbage, and cauliflower. Still no sign of
lettuces and carrots. Shallots and garlic are sending out shoots but
elephant garlic hasn't emerged yet. Home Depot had a fresh shipment of
Burpee seed marked as "Packed for the 1998 Season" - they're kinda
expensive but germination is outstanding.
Our AZ State Fair opens on Oct. 16. I don't expect to have anything to
enter other than eggplant, peppers, pomegranates, lemons, oranges,
tangelos, tangerines and grapefruit. Thirty years ago, most of the
vegetable exhibits were entered by farmers. Today it's mostly home
gardeners but it's still interesting to see what's being grown locally
as well as throughout the state. Our life zones vary from tropical
desert at Yuma to arctic in the high mountains so there's a lot of
diversity.
