In our old house we had a few apple trees, and every morning, 7 deer
would march by them, to the left, and stop and eat all the buds off. In
the evening, the same 7 would march by to the right, and take a few more
bites. They would even stand up on their hind legs to get the upper
buds. Even yelling or throwing stuff at them would not stop them. I
was told to get small bars of Dial Soap, and, leaving the wrapper on,
drill a hole through each bar, and insert a piece of wire to hang it
from a branch. We put lots of these on the trees, plus stocking bags of
human and dog hair, and those deer did not care one bit. They wouldn't
even move until we were right on top of them practically! Finally, I gave
up and let them eat whatever they wanted, because even if they missed
some buds and we got some apples, these consarned squirrels would show up
right before we were about to pick them, and strip all the trees bare.
I'm very VERY sad to hear that Mike McGrath is no longer going to be the
Editor in Chief at Organic Gardening. Does anybody know who is going to try
and fill his shoes?
Today I picked all of my jalapenos, which did eventually turn red. I will
hang all the red ones with thread from the dining 'room chandelier, to dry,
and the green ones I will put in the blender with oil and freeze in Ice
cube trays.
I know this is off topic, but can anybody tell me what I should do with a
cutting of a blue hydrangea that I started and I guess it took because
the leaves (I cut off 2/3 of each) are still turgid. But there has been
no new leaf growth. It is in a pot, and I'm not sure if I should take it
out & plant it, or should I sink it in the pot into the ground and put lots
of pine needles on it, or what?
This is the first year I grew those giant cool sunflowers that give the
seeds, and they were just great. We got plenty for ourselves, and we put
a lot out for the birds to eat. I'll be planting them again next year. I
also plan to try Jingle Bells Peppers, because I only hear good things
about them.
