I don't know what is a float bed, but I have worked with a group that had
dozens of the Mittleider beds (MB). The method is very successful if you do
not have soil of sufficient quality to grow plants. Following directions is
VERY IMPORTANT. The mix of sawdust and sand is critical. The nutrient mix
is precisely blended to supply plant needs. Our group had the good fortune
of advice from Dr. M. and got chemicals of the right kinds and mixed their
own recipe so didn't have to get the commercial product, which is quite
expensive and may be hard to find. The method and timing of the fertilizer
applications to the MB must be as the book says. The MB can be very
productive- you can plant way before soil could be worked and with
protective covers (easy to apply) extend the growing season. If you are
going into this way of growing, get the book and follow it exactly-you'll
have success. Hatch Patch
