Hi Fred,

You only need one tree. My favorite variety to grow is Hass. (Fuerte is also
a good old variety but tends to bear well every other year.) When ripe it has
a dark pebbled skin and creamy rich nutty-tasting flesh. It is essential to
grow a grafted tree. One from seed will give you a rank growing tree that
will take years to fruit and the fruit will be incredibly inferior. OK for
mediocre guacamole, but why waste the space on a tree that is really only fit
for firewood? If you can find a branch, and if you know how to graft, you
can grow a rootstock from seed, and then graft it, but you may loose some
disease resistence from a selected rootstock.

I would check what varieties grow well in your area. I am in so. california,
so the varieties that would be good for you might be different. Ask someone
who is growing them in your area which do best.

Good luck, janet
