Stan's back

Hi all. I'm back from my, ah, vacation. Yeah, that's it, vacation.
By the way, the Easter Bunny says "Hi."
I'm sure I missed a lot of good stuff while I was gone,
but, then again, I miss a lot of stuff when I am here, so, I
probably won't know it anyway.
Anyway, I have had some success with my garden this
season. The biggest success was with my Roma tomatoes.
     This is what I did.
First, I had Robbie rototill the row. It is 5ft wide with two foot
trenches on each side, about 8 inches deep. I then laid down
two soaker hoses right where I expected to plant the tomato
transplants. I then covered the entire area, including the
trenches with 6 mil black plastic sheeting. ( I think a lot of people
don't like this method, but it worked for me. I don't get much ground
based bugs here in Colorado anyway.) ( I think the black plastic, with
the huge amount of sun we get, kind of sterilizes the soil to a degree).
I then cut an "X" into
each place I wanted to plant a tomato plant. 3 ft apart, about
18 inches in from the side. On the other side, I planted
green peppers every foot.
I had a huge crop of great tasting Roma tomatoes. I had
no weeds and no ill effects from ground dwelling bugs. All
the plants were extremely healthy and vigorous. I did spray
Sevin a few times to keep the tomato bugs down. The only
mistake I made was not staking them somehow. I kept trying
to figure a way to make cages that would not puncture the
plastic and still stand up to the high winds we can get in Spring.
By the time I figured it out, it was too late. WUNY. The sprawl of the
tomato plants was huge and made harvesting difficult.
The green pepper plants did poorly. Probably because
the tomato plants started covering them. Maybe the green pepper
plants don't like the hot soil under the plastic like the tomato plants
do.
Anyway, it's nice to be back.

Stan the cheap and lazy gardener

P.S. Those who are DHCF's will know what WUNY means.
P.P.S. Hey, I didn't say my "vacation" did me any good.
