I had a similar problem with my patch of strawberries too. Although I did
get a few berries the first year, it was very meager compared to the
foliage growth. That was last year. I left them alone and this year I've
more strawberries than I could eat. It seems they needed to get
established first. Part of my problem with excessive foliage growth too
was probably that I planted them in composted manure--too much nitrogen.
This year's crop of berries was definitely worth it though, lasting all
summer long.
