Sorry, in the interests of brevity, I did not put my point sufficiently
clearly.
Ornamental gourds are just another gourd and therefore as edible as the
rest of the family although I must confess that I haven't tried to eat
them myself. After all their beauty is only skin deep. But if you treat
them as is appropriate for their ornamental role, that is grow them hard
and ripen them off as much as possible to get rid of the moisture so
that they will last a long time it is reasonable to expect that they
will not be as platable as those gourds/pumpkins grown specifically for
eating. Having said that we have left largish marrows and pumpkins on
occasion well into the new year and then found them fully edible. 
However I think you have made your point, Steve, that as they can be
eaten  we are in the clear to discuss them on the veggie-list.
