Re: my garden here in southern california
: I would rather be wicked than weary. :)
Yes I understand and agree...it seems to be a Gardener thing LOL
:
:
: I think growing where there a definite strong seasons would be very
: difficult. Such timing. Here I can get away with timing indescretions
with
: little or no repercussions.
That sounds good...we have a fairly strict season routine and if we dont
stick to it, then we miss out.But it really is a matter of looking around
you and taking note of what is happening in the garden rather than looking
at the calender.
:
: I dont have a dormant period but when it is cool and the days very short,
: things do grow more slowly.
:
: As to frost, I rarely have it. Once in 7 years and not harsh enough to
: damage the tomatoes.
Lucky you..But then what about pests and diseases? One thing about a
frost..it will kill off bugs etc...
. The sugar snap pea seedlings I set out
: last Jan 1 were the best of the season.
Phew...Jan 1 is too hot to set out anything here...that is when our hottest
weather starts to take over...I spend most of my day watering.
Our last official frost date is Oct 25 or thereabouts...but in a good year
we can plant before that. The potatoes are in now and hopefully should have
the first crop in Nov.
Beans, tomatoes.peppers chillies eggplants and other tender plants get left
till the last frost date to plant...just in case! The first frost date is in
April...but again it depends on the weather. So we do get a good 6 months of
growing...In other parts of NZ they dont get frosts,so like you Janet they
can grow most of the year.
My broadbeans are losing their flowers,so just a few more weeks and I will
be able to start picking them....and I cant wait.Asparagus is making its way
into the stores as is the first new potatoes...so we know spring is well and
truely here.
The best time of year as far as I am concerned :-)
I find the different growing conditions around the world fasinating...so
lets hear of some more.
