oddball crops

Calling all oddball crops!

On my web site, called In Season, at <http://www.marketreport.com>, I
publish a story each month about an unsung fruit or vegetable with
overlooked virtues -- an oddball crop that deserves more respect. Anybody
have any candidates for future inclusion?

So far, I’ve covered purslane, nopales, cherimoyas, duck eggs (okay, that
one’s not a fruit or vegetable) and this month, jujubes. You can see the
past months’ write-ups on these crops at
<http://www.marketreport.com/intrepid.htm> and this month’s story about
jujubes at <http://marketreport.com/marketpage.htm>.

In the coming months, I plan to cover such crops as Jerusalem artichokes,
watercress, chayote squash and some subtropical fruits and vegetables
available here in California such as pepinos, yacon and sapotes. Has
anybody had any experience with any of these – either growing or eating them?

Arguably, I should include in the category of underappreciated crops some
fruits and vegetables that aren’t quite as far off the beaten track as
jujubes but are still somewhat out of the mainstream – like leeks, fresh
figs and fennel. Any thoughts from the adventurous gardeners and epicures
on this list would be appreciated.

Mark Thompson
