Thank you all for the comments and advice. I do not know which 
variety of Barberry this is, I didn't plant it. This is the remainder 
of a 60' hedge, at least 30 years old; alas the rest was long gone 
when I moved in. I'm glad to see from the article Chris pointed me to 
that I can compost the mix of hulls and mulch I pulled out from under 
the plant as there is quite a bit of it. And I will no longer lime it.
